Turn Down The World’s Volume

There is nothing devastating than trying to concentrate on an important assignment while struggling to tune down loud noise from the neighborhood. In such critical moment, what comes to mind is to grab a remote control and turn down the volume of the outside noise if possible. From the television to the radio and to the social media, the world’s volume is loudest.

It is an undisputable fact that we live in a world where so many voices are craving for our attention as Christians. Our minds are filled with noise from unresolved issues. Throughout the day, we battle with distractions and stress such as exhaustion, depression, fear, anger and anxiety.

In the midst of these voices, it is easy to miss the true voice of God that matters most. Hearing from God amidst these loud noises can prove challenging even to the most organized person. It is therefore important to pull away from this devastating noise from the outside world and listen to the voice of God.

Christianity today is bedeviled with the greatest challenge because of the different types of voices from false teachers and prophets which has made it difficult to know what God is actually communicating to His children in this generation. With the quest of Christians finding solution to their predicaments, a number of voices are heard. Satan’s loudest voice is heard during the vulnerability of men in times of suffering.

These so-called ‘prophets’ and ‘dream interpreters’ parade themselves today seeking for the attention of people. It is disheartening to hear some of the messages being preached on the air waves. Real gospel messages are not preached by these false prophets and teachers. Messages on prosperity have now become the order of the day. By all standards, the grace of God is free but these false prophets capitalized on the ignorance of people and extract money from them.

Paul in his admonition to the apostles in Acts 20:29 noted that “For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock”. (NKJV). This figurative expression (personification) follows naturally on the idea of the flock and of the shepherds who keep watch over them. It lies in the nature of the case that the wolf stands primarily for the open enemy of the flock (Satan). The wolves, however, might come in sheep’s clothing. Many families have been destroyed with marriage relations broken apart due to the loud volume from these false prophets.

Notwithstanding, one needs to acknowledge the fact that God still speaks today through godly men and women. It must be known that while the world is screaming at you through these fake voices, God speaks in that still small voice.

From 1 Kings 19:11-20, I strongly agree with scriptures that if Elijah had paid attention to the boisterous wind, earthquake and fire, he would have missed the still small voice of God. There are two other voices that speak to us apart from our inner intuition. They are the voice of God through the direction of the Holy Spirit and the voice of Satan. Satan always love to stir up the emotional chaos in our lives to keep us from walking in the right fellowship with God.

Whatever means through which God speaks to Christians, it must be examined empirically in the light of the authority of God’s written word. The Bible must be seen as the first source and authentic reference in order to distinguish between God’s voice and that of Satan. The Bible clearly explain God’s divine plans and purpose for man and the universe.

It must be established that before we can listen to God, we need to turn down the world’s volume. We should not pay attention to the noise from the outside world. As Christians, we need to pray for the gift of discernment in order to know the true voice of God.
